SkiBetterNow: Ski Instructional Tools for a new Era

The Path to Better Skiing Passes Directly Through Money. The Question is How Much? Written by: Stephen Phipps, Coach, Competitor, and Sponsored Extreme Skier (back in the day!)

Here at the Weekend Warrior's we are very thankful to the ski industry for spending an inordinate amount of time and money, year to year, on improving our equipment. Yet, for us, the manufacturers' promises seem a little empty, as every year comes with the Proclamation of Ski Grandeur - The promise that this year's latest and greatest pair of skis and/or boots will make you a better skier - EASILY. Is that a fact, or is there more to the story?

Consider this: Skis do not teach. New skis cannot improve your technique.  Skis do not give you simple drills that improve your skiing. Skis do not talk to you about your bad habits. Skis do not show you videos of correct technique. Yet, skis do make you better if you know what to do with them.

The new breed of skis will get you on edge with less effort, give you more float in powder, and help you bust through crud more easily. But, you will still be carrying with you all the bad habits that limit you and deny you the joy of skiing the powder all day long, or the crud all day long, or the steeps all day long. Why? Because, if one is skiing without proper technique, then one expends much more energy to go the same distance as a talented skier. Therefore, the less accomplished skier gets out of the fun stuff after just a short foray into skiing bliss or they accept their fate and rarely leave the groomed runs. Let us not forget that with improved technique even the groomed runs become a-whole-lot-more fun.

New equipment may release you from being a "Prisoner of the Groomed", but it is only a work release program, not a ticket to skiing freedom. Add our simple teaching tools and you can be permanently set free to ski wherever you desire. With this combination, new skis become the "greatest thing since the Internet" or sliced bread depending.....

What will you feel at the end of the day if you have skied everywhere on the Mountain with ease, or not? If you have escaped the "or not" category, with beer in hand, you will probably be saying about the same thing you always do, except you will be saying it with a true sense of inner joy and, finally, you will feel a good amount of accomplishment and satisfaction. You will no longer secretly be questioning your abilities on the hill and  limiting your climb up the fun meter. You will be a confident skier. So, how do you get to these feelings?

To get there, we "dream of" and "lust after" the easy fix. If I just had new skis, I would be the king of the hill. I can see myself shredding any slope, any condition - If I just had new skis, this would be the year. Unfortunately, for most of us, this is only a dream unless we improve our technique.

Spend a $1000 on new skis and instantly we "shall not" be better. Don't get me wrong, as I said previously, the new equipment is great (some going back 6 years). However, to utilize it to full potential you need a complete understanding of ski technique and how to practice and apply it. With our instructional tools you can become the envy of all your skiing buddies, and it is less expensive and easier than ever before. We encourage you to spend $50 or less with us before you plop down a $1000 for new ski equipment, unless this is the year you need to replace your worn out old boards or boots.

To this point, I have many friends that are high-level expert skiers still using their 3-6 year old skis, paired with boots that go back as far as 10 years. Note that these skiers have more than one pair of skis in their quiver. Having great equipment is important, but not essential to being an expert skier. Three things are important: good technique, boots that fit correctly ( from a professional boot fitter) and skis that are shop-tuned several times a year (between tunes you should do a stone and wax every day before hitting the slopes).

Don't wait, you can begin your journey toward expert all mountain skiing by spending only $6.95 on the purchase of our Powder E-Ski Booklet. This will start you down the low cost path to becoming a more advanced skier. Your $6.95 purchase will consist of an email containing our 32 page E-Ski booklet that reveals all our powder skiing secrets in an easy to understand format. A great deal at ten times the price, but that is not all you get. We also include links to our instructional videos that further explain and demonstrate our clever techniques for skiing Powder. The tips and techniques revealed in this E-Ski booklet make it very easy to become a better powder skier quickly, or learn how to ski powder from the beginning. The following link takes you to a short video revealing two of our tips for skiing powder. However, this only scratches the surface and these two tips alone will not make you a great powder skier. For that experience go to our secure-online store and pick up your Powder E-Ski Booklet. If you like what you see, you may want to buy all three booklets, Powder, Basic Skills, and Moguls. Early in my ski career I was frustrated by an inability to ski in control everywhere on the mountain. I wanted to be like the expert skiers we all know. I wanted to look like them and be able to ski effortlessly all over the mountain, with pretty much the same style, no matter what the conditions.

The problem I faced was having no money for ski lessons and I skied so poorly I felt I needed to get better before I could even benefit from a lesson (probably not a very accurate thought process at the time, but I went with it).

In spite of this, I was able to come up with a solution. I decided to watch every video available about skiing and read every magazine, book, or pamphlet ever published on the subject. This solution worked and I learned to be a competent all mountain skier and successful competitor.

Now, 3 decades later I have finally had the opportunity to talk with other skiers about making the jump from intermediate to expert. I ask them all the same question; what three things made you a great skier?

At first I was a bit stunned - as the answer everyone gave me was the same! The three things that helped them the most were (and I am paraphrasing):

1. Read everything thing you can on ski technique and watch every instructional video you can find. Combining these two mediums will give you a more complete learning experience.

2. Practice with a purpose. Get into a routine that includes a specific warm-up  on groomed runs, every time you go skiing. This helps remind your body how to ski correctly. In addition, always practice drills on and off snow to create an awareness of what it is you should be doing. Never stop learning.

3. Get yourself on video and analyze it. Being able to see how you ski creates awareness, enabling you to correct flaws in technique. Your perception of your skiing style is rarely like the video reality. Do you get what I mean here? You rarely (actually never) look like you think you look.

So, what have I learned? The key take-away from all my years of skiing, and talking with skiers, is that the best learning tool you can get is one that both explains and demonstrates the principles of correct skiing technique. From that epiphany I have created our E-Ski Booklets, available right here on our website. I feel they are the best learning value available, combining video demonstrations (via links) with simple explanations of ski technique. This is accomplished in a short 32 page Electronic Booklet, for a very low price, that comes to you via email.

From there, if you want to take it to the next level, you can combine our book on becoming an expert skier with our real moguls DVD. They compliment each other, and together give you the tools to ski crud, powder, steeps, and moguls.  All of our books and DVDs are supported by our ongoing forum, Ask the Expert, and the ever changing content of this website.

Lastly, if you are really serious about becoming a better skier this year, purchase our book right now, read it cover to cover, do the dry land drills in your living room, and then go take a ski lesson this season. Our book will create awareness of what you should be doing and what you should be thinking about, creating a much more valuable ski lesson. The book uses special techniques to effectively train your body to move like an expert skier. You will benefit by having this knowledge before you hit the slopes the next time.

Remember, without awareness of correct ski technique, there can be no correct skiing. Get our simple solutions and SkiBetterNow.    Article Written by: S. Phipps
